The High Commission of the Republic of Kenya, New Delhi

The Kenya High Commission in New Delhi was established in 1969. This cemented the diplomatic relations with the Government of India having established a High Commission in Kenya after Kenya’s Independence in 1963.

India played a significant role towards the attainment of Kenya’s Independence. The friendship has deepened over the years through long standing shared historical, economic and social ties. The two countries have witnessed growing engagements in all aspects of bilateral relations: political, economic, trade, defence and security, tourism, healthcare, socio-cultural, education, training and technology. India is Kenya’s largest trading partner in the Indian subcontinent, providing a market for a variety of Kenya’s exports.

Kenya and India have had high level exchanges that have created the desired momentum for advancing relations between the two countries. India is a key partner in Kenya’s national development aspirations and has the potential to contribute to Kenya’s development agenda particularly with respect to the Bottom up transformative agenda focusing in Agriculture, Healthcare, MSMEs, Digital Creative Economy and Affordable housing.

The exchange of visits and meetings at various levels have contributed to enhanced relations between leaders, senior government officials further forging mutual understanding and closer cooperation of the two countries at bilateral and multilateral levels in areas that form the key pillars of our foreign policy. These areas include trade and investments, military cooperation, tourism, healthcare, capacity building, cultural exchanges as well as peace and security matters.

The mission established in New Delhi has over the years expanded as a focal point of Kenya’s diplomatic representation in the South Asia region. The remit of the mission is to deepen the existing cordial relations by contributing to peace efforts and bilateral cooperation between Kenya and India, and countries of Accreditation-Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Nepal and Bhutan.

Moreover, opportunities in Kenya are enormous given Kenya’s geo-political location at the confluence of the Great Lakes, and the Horn of Africa, and the Indian Ocean contiguity makes it a strategic gateway to Africa’s major trading blocs such as the East African Community (EAC), the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Nairobi is also home to the United Nations Office where numerous different UN agencies have a joint presence.

The Kenya High Commission in New Delhi plays a critical role in advancing Kenya’s Interest in India and Countries of accreditation with an objective to enhance diplomatic engagements and fostering increased bilateral and multilateral cooperation. The mission seeks to facilitate trade and investment partnerships geared towards the realization of Kenya’s development objectives as highlighted in the bottom up economic agenda as well as promoting and protecting the welfare and interest of the Kenyan Diaspora and protecting the image and prestige of Kenyan in the region.
